I have three pineapple sage plants that overwintered in the front yard. All three were reblooming but the new growth froze off about a week ago. I figured the plants were dead but tis morning saw new growth from one plant's roots. The new growth had been protected by the dead leaves I had scattered in the front yard to protect new growth.
I replanted one blueberry plant two days ago. They too are doing well. The jujube tree is still in its original pot. It, too is blooming.
The tall fescue is starting to turn brown...perhaps it's already getting too hot for it.
I placed the last of the citrus trees outside. It's the largest pot; I had to use the dolly to move it outside.
Sadie, however, likes to dig in the back yard. Although she prefers new black top soil, she also likes the more compact native soil. It's hard to grow stuff in the back yard as long as she's back there digging.

National Home Gardening Club is a scam!
I got an invoice a few days from the National Home Garden Club. The annual membership was $12. I immediately got curious because
1) I didn't joing the NHGC
2) Reviews on-line were mostly negative with many people complaining about the company's scamming policies
3) It's mostly for Northern Gardeners which I am definitely NOT.
The website doesn't even have a "Contact Us" email or phone number, which got me even more curious. The rest of the website was more about marketing cheap Chinese-made products I didn't need since as a gardener I already have all the basic stuff.
Other sites I googled mentioned many displeased "accidental" members who got unsolicited books and cheap garden tools they were to review.
So I called their number 1-800-324-8454 which is actually not the "club's" number but its ad agency number. I told the man on the other end that I wanted to cancel my membership since I supposedly was on a "Free 30-day trial." (Oddly, the North American Fishing Club uses the same tactic to lure people into joining)
He wanted to know why I wanted to cancel. "Because I didn't ask to join this club!" I replied.
"You didn't, that is just the company's way of pulling new members into its club" he said.
HaHA! So there's a slick marketing scam. He asked me for my "Member Number" which was on the upper right of my "Benefits Summary" and gladly removed me from the NHGC's data base.
"You'll get another notice from them in a few days to remind you that your fees are past due, so just ignore them."
"Oh I will, or else I have another tactic planned!" I quickly answered.
So, how did I get on the NHGC's data base? The only outside garden club I joined was last year's free membership to Home Depot's alleged Garden Club, which up to now was nothing more than getting two coupons for $25 off garden stuff above a certain monetary amount.

Cool-weather vegetables
I tilled and sowed one small 4x4 garden of fallen beans and peas that Sadie had knocked over. These seeds were all left-overs from last year's harvest. It will be a potpourri if any of them germinate.
In the old Indian Garden I also planted snow peas, also which Sadie had knocked over. I added new top soil and sulfur and even today's coffee grounds for added nitrogen. I placed wooden beams over the watered soil to keep Sadie out of there; she tends to dig in the loose soil. She also feasted on another fresh bag of bone meal.
The rain storm from California ended up over northern AZ; we are dry today but cooler.

Planted new ocotillo
I ended up putting the new ocotillo in the same spot the old one was in, digging a deeper hole, removing one rather feisty prickly pear I didn't want to have there, and even stuck in a few dead stems around the live plant to add contrast.
I also removed a few heliopsis from the front yard, spread a few seeds and watered with grey water. A bag of sweet peas that Sadie opened and scattered on the back porch was also planted. I added sulfur to the Indian Garden bed, pulled more dead bean plants out of the garden.

More snow and rain are due!
Although I don't care for the cold, I am happy for the precipitation. Clouds were clear in the morning but the storm clouds came back in the afternoon and it rained some more in the early evening. This was perfect indoor weather that kept me inside reading my assignments.

Storms expected to last; may bring snow to desert floor
Half-inch of rain in Tucson today; up to 8 inches of snow already fallen on Mount Lemmon
By Alex Dalenberg
ARIZONA DAILY STAR
The late-winter storms that dropped a half-inch of rain on Tucson today and up to 8 inches of snow on Mount Lemmon will linger into the week — and forecasters say there's a chance snow may fall on the desert floor.
Forecasters already have a winter storm watch in effect for elevations above 4,000 feet Monday evening though Tuesday afternoon, said Chris Rasmussen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
The storm is expected to bring 10 to 18 inches of snow above 7,000 feet, Rasmussen said.
The forecast adds up to good news for skiers. If the predictions are correct, Mount Lemmon’s Ski Valley, which sits at about 8,200 feet, should be able to open its ski runs later this week, said Graham Davies, an area manager at Ski Valley.
Four to 8 inches of snow fell on the mountain Sunday, but no official totals were available Sunday night, Rasmussen said.
Ski Valley had just over a foot of snow left over from December. If the slopes get another 6 inches or more they should be be, “good to go,” Davies said.
“Hopefully, we’ll be open in the next couple of days … If I believe what the weatherman says,” he said.
Because of the winter weather, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department closed the Catalina Highway at the base of Mount Lemmon to the public Sunday morning and again that evening, said Deputy Nicole Feldt, an agency spokeswoman.
Access to the mountain today will depend on the weather. The mountain was open for a short time Sunday, but only to vehicles with snow chains or four-wheel-drive, Feldt said.
In addition to snow in the mountains, about half an inch of rain fell throughout the Tucson area Sunday, Rasmussen said.
More rain should fall early this week as a low pressure system moves through the area, he said. Snow could fall in the high desert with 2 to 4 inches expected between 4,000 and 5,000 feet Monday evening, Rasmussen said.
“We’re in a fairly active weather pattern right now,” he said.

New snow on the mountains
We didn't get hit with as much snow as predicted, but the peaks outside are now covered in a fresh white layer of snow. Temperatures right now are also cooler than they were yesterday; the current temperature is 46F at 60% humidity at 10:40am local.
The soil is perfect for tilling. I pulled more weeds out. My ocotillo will remain in its pot a while longer, perhaps another month, before I decide where to plant it. The location where the original ocotillo grew has been taken over by the rosemary shrub. The new ocotillo will most likely get a more eastern location in direct sunlight, but the front yard is getting overly crowded for new growth! Anything new that grows this year in the front yard will be strays I've allowed to grow. As for trees go, such as offspring from the palo verde, may have to be sacrificed.
Eventually the two deciduous trees will have to go, especially the more western tree as its trunk was badly damaged in what was perhaps a strong windstorm; its cambium is cracked up to six inches across in some spots and the tree's never regained its vigor compared to its neighbor. Yet as long as it grows leaves in the spring and provided shade for some of the shrubs, I will let it be.
My fig tree is growing new buds already. This may be too early. More frost is expected for another month. I will try to keep my eyes out for it. My nectarine, plum and peach trees are also showing signs of small red buds developing. One of my Blueray shrubs also has its first white blossoms open.
I bought three Southern Highbush Misty blueberries yesterday at WalMart. They were $10 for a quart-sized plant, an average price. Lowe's is also selling blueberries and blackberry shrubs now. It's so tempting to plant but I will wait another month for any rooted plants. My concern for the next month is making sure none of the fruit trees break out into bloom and then get killed off by late frost. That happened last March and I never got one fruit off any of the trees.

Things want to grow
My pineapple sage is growing new shoots. Some of my purple sage is, too. Although I'm sure we have one more month of potential freezes, my plants want to grow!
I trimmed back dead branches today on the smaller shrubs in the front yard, cut back on the desert broom in the alley and watered my seedlings in the vegetable garden. Several of my lemon seeds germinated. I planted one outside in a planter and placed the rest back in the sealed moist envelope in the south-facing windowsill.

Peas, turnips and cabbage
Today was the first day I planted a spring harvest of sweet peas, green cabbage and turnips. If only I can keep Vinnie the Cat out of the vegetable beds and Sadie from digging up dirt in the backyard.
It was a beautiful day today. Hard to imagine we're in winter when the rest of the country is still freezing.

It smells like citrus
All four citrus trees are now radiating a glorious citrusy aroma in the living room. I wish I could have the flowers polinated. Whe I tried myself I only caused the blossoms to fall off. I love the smell of citrus.
I pruned my green palo verde tree this morning (I didn't work today). The palos in town are already greening but mine is quite bald.
We are in a short heat wave again, with highs approaching the 70s, and lows in the mid 30s.

I pruned my green palo verde tree this morning (I didn't work today). The palos in town are already greening but mine is quite bald.
We are in a short heat wave again, with highs approaching the 70s, and lows in the mid 30s.
